'Mouse hole', from Old English mus [moos] 'mouse' + hol [holl] 'hole', the reference being either to a large cave on the coast or to the small size of the harbour. The Cornish name means 'harbour by an island' (St Clements) from porth 'landing-place, harbour' + enys 'island'.
